The Blessings of Brownouts

The other night, we had a unscheduled brownout in our area which lasted several hours. Around the glows of candles, my daughters, aged 8 and 9, created shadow images and imagined roasting marshmallows. Then they get to the point of being bored and couldn’t think of anything to do without technology and entertainment being powered by electricity. So I told them that during our younger years, brownouts were being anticipated and were our excuse to have some FUN!

During those days, primetime TV shows were not that competitive and over-hyped that I remember watching it during 6pm newscasts only. There are also no ipods, playstations, cable channels, cellphones, karaoke or videoke that distracts us from studying and going to bed early. But when brownout occurs, its just like an impulse for everyone to go out fan-off the heat inside the house. The kids gathers around and starts to select what game we should be playing. Usually under the moonlight, our street games are either ‘taguan’ or hide and seek or patintero, a game where there are ‘guards’ on every stops and the object is to pass these guards to get a point or ‘agawan base,’ where the team members will be prisoners of the opponent team and the object of the game is to rescue the prisoners . These games usually takes hours and it seems no end because the losing team always asks for another round hoping to get even or take the lead. The games makes our hearts pumped because of the sheer excitement and thrill of beating the opponent, not to mention the buckets of perspiration we accumulate. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, our adventure ends when the lights went back again. We retreat to our homes tired, exhausted and will sleep with a smile of contentment.

It’s just a loss that the kids generation today was not able to experience this. They are very dependent on the technology and electricity that at times they feel the everything will stop without power. I hope that before my kids leave their childhood, they will be able to play the games we played.

Our loved ones need the best and reliable skilled nursing facility (SNF) when the right moment comes. It is important that we are prepared when that time comes to avoid confusion, and abrupt decisions which may put at risk our loved ones welfare because of poor planning.

These days, there are a several SNF’s available almost every where. These facilities offer a variety of services that are designed to meet the needs of our loved ones. One must be careful in selecting these facilities because we should remember that this decision will be for the happiness and satisfaction of our loved ones. We must invest our time to review a skilled nursing facility to make sure that what we will be selecting fits the needs and requirements of our loved ones.

Before choosing the best facility for your loved ones, you must consider the following:

  1. short or long term stay – depending on what the doctor prescribed
  2. type of illness – rehab only or specialized care

Once we have identified these factors, we can then select what best fits our loved ones needs depending on the type of services these SNF’s offer.

And lastly, we must discuss with the facility administrators our expectations so that they are informed that we are aware of what standards should an SNF be following.

Why Worry? Be Happy!

Years ago from the previous company that I’ve worked at, I was talking to one of our Systems Administrators. Then he mentioned that I have long and thick hair so I told him that yes its true but there are too many grey hairs already. So he told me having grey hair is better than no hair at all. Then I looked at him and remember that at his age, late twenties, he’s totally bald already due to his genes. This incident has really lifted my spirits and I often told myself that I could easily go to the parlor and have a cellophane of any color that I want if I don’t want to see those grey hairs. We should be contented of what we have right now. We should know the difference between our wants and needs. With this, we could easily prioritize our resources depending on our capacity. If this will be our outlook in life, then we could say that we are contented even though we only have a simple galvanized roof over our head, 3 meals a day consisting of fish and rice, clothes from ukay-ukay, education in a public school, etc. This is just a matter of looking on the other side of the mirror, having a different perspective of what we have. Then if this happen, we could say that we are happy of what we have right now.

Year Twenty-0-eight

“Time flies-by so fast when you’re having fun” so as the saying goes. And once again, Christmas came and went and we never noticed. The question is, why haven’t you noticed? Is it because you’re too busy with your career, busy with your business, with your love life? You’re hard to locate because you have to attend to a meeting, need to go somewhere for a presentation, finish the paperworks to meet deadline, close a deal and transaction or just spend most of your time infront of computer just like me ;-).

I know that I am not the only one guilty about this, but most of us are. We are aware that we really need that break, that sought-after vacation leave in Boracay you’ve been planning to have five (5) years ago but somehow, until now this is still a hard task to do. So with the coming of the new year, you will then take your pen and paper and write again your new year’s resolution with BORACAY in capital letters placed in number two spot with MIRACLE positioned in number 1. But as they say also, it is you who designs your destiny. At the end of each day, you will be the one to decide for yourself what is best for you. If you let circumstances dictate your life, then your much needed vacation will still be miracle to achieve. But if you will take the wheels and make decisions for yourself, then maybe this year, the miracle would be a reality.

ENJOY this coming year 2008!
